Course Description
While time spent outdoors has proven health and wellness benefits for seniors, investment in outdoor program space is a tough sell in northern climates where winters are perceived to be long. For seniors as well as providers, the COVID-19 pandemic triggered a paradigm shift for designed exterior space in cold climates. Something once undervalued began to represent freedom, independence, connection to community, and an alternative to the negative mental and physical effects of social isolation. This session will present case studies and document their unique response to this paradigm shift. Presenters will highlight opportunities to leverage the momentum generated during the pandemic into better site design and campus planning for senior communities.
