Course Description:

We’ve been inundated with news about how bad the nursing home industry has become. But the industry has found itself in this position over a longer period of time. Government regulations, consumers’ changing attitude, aging physical environments, diminishing staff availability and some poor management practices led to the current situation.

However, the situation should not be viewed without optimism. As providers, designers, and consumers we can help modify the atmosphere in which nursing provision in a congregate living environment is not only welcoming, but also purposeful, homelike, community oriented, and even profitable.

This presentation will explore the reasons for the decline of skilled nursing homes from historic, environmental, financial, and conceptional viewpoints. That exploration will begin with a brief history of the nursing home model in the United States and will continue with discussion about how governmental bureaucracy, owner’s avarice, economical variances, demographics, and consumer perception have contributed to an industry that is in turmoil without clear understanding of how to recover.

Examples and discussion of approaches to overcome these issues in the contemporary atmosphere of regulation, design and care provision delivery will provide optimism for what can be a significant, and perhaps necessary, change in the skilled nursing industry.
