Beautifully designed senior living communities provide a sense of permanence and longevity. However, that permanence can be routinely and sometimes dramatically challenged by natural or man-made disasters. Weather-related events such as hurricanes, tornadoes, and flooding can compromise or destroy buildings in an instant. Protecting your facilities and, more importantly, the health, safety, and welfare of your residents and staff is paramount. Resilient design provides the capacity to bounce back after a disturbance or interruption. This session will highlight building design and strategies that can more successfully adapt to natural conditions and that can more readily absorb and recover from adverse events.

Learning Objectives

• Identify and recognize the basic principles and terms associated with resilient building design.

• Assess a variety of methods to protect a building and residents from flooding and extreme rain events.

• Explore back-up systems and safe room designs and protocols in case of emergencies.

• Become familiar with other influences on resilient design including codes and insurance requirements.
