Course Description:

Language matters in the Design Equity® services developed by Determined by Design, LLC. Equitable design standards shift perspectives, bring people together, and influence community outcomes. To practice equitable design is to replace what we’re taught with a creative, empathic, and concept-based design approach to provide equitable design outcomes for black, indigenous, and other minority people and communities. As designers of affordable multifamily and senior living, members of Determined by Design will share their process of “finding the concept”—an indigenized design strategy that engages in critical land, site, neighborhood, and community research for the creation of elements, space, and materials. This indigenized approach to the design process generates successful health, safety, and welfare outcomes.

Learning Objectives:

Expand your knowledge and understanding of Equitable Design in its practical application.

Learn a step-by-step method for “finding the concept,” resulting in a design process that reflects the community’s culture and needs (both physical and emotional).

Understand how design for health, safety, and welfare benefits from design equity.

Explore the various methods of respectful cultural engagement to inform the design process and provide safe, inclusive, and enriching environments for ALL residents.
