Once a project is awarded, designers too often start laying lines on paper so excited that they focus introvertedly into a design project. With commissions such as office buildings where there might be a variety of disparate end users, adequately designing an environment that addresses the building program may be good enough. However, in a senior living environment, designers are creating a home, a workplace, and most importantly a community. This community must function socially, economically and physically. But it must also celebrate the individual lives of the residents and staff as they interact, and it must also maintain a connection to the broader community from which those residents and staff come. If we lose sight of this requirement, we have simply designed a building where a community was necessary. There are numerous overt and subtle ways to create a senior living environmental design that encourages community engagement both on campus and with the broader surrounding community. This webinar will discuss the implementation of those efficacies as well as provide completed examples of successful environments, both in the US and internationally and at varying socio-economic levels, that have done so. Once that contract is awarded, we owe our client and the users of senior environments our best creative talents and our understanding of the community that we are creating.

Attendees will, through case study examples, gain a knowledge of successful environmental designs that play important roles in creating and engaging community;
Attendees will learn about the key organizational factors necessary to create environmental designs that promote the social interaction among residents, family and visitors.
Attendees will learn that both interior and exterior design efficacies play important roles in shaping the campus community as well as serve as inviting environments for the broader community.
