Course Description
Senior living communities continue to evolve from sterile institutional settings to more hospitality-inspired environments. A key factor in elevating this senior living experience is providing residents with deep and meaningful connections to the outdoors and enhanced socialization. This aligns with a growing design industry focus on biophilia—”the innate human instinct to connect with nature and other living beings.” Biophilic design elements promote a healthy, comfortable, and engaging environment. This session will explore the biophilic perspective from several projects, focusing on the mindset of architectural design, interior design, landscape architecture, and operations (care and activities).
Learning Objectives
• Understand how to embed biophilic design concepts from the very first site planning discussions to the final interior design finishes.
• Explain the importance of cooperation between the physical environment and operational choices to achieve the highest impact of biophilic design elements.
• Consider how an environment enriched with biophilic features improves the health and well-being of residents, family, and staff and the marketability of a community.
• Identify the ROI for biophilic design features in both interior and exterior environments.
