Course Description:

Designing for everyone includes consideration of the capabilities of residents, patients, and the public. Our experience with Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG) has taught that incorporating accessibility solutions benefits everyone. Studies of the biological link between Autism and Dementia increase the understanding that there are more similarities than differences. Exploring these timelines side by side, we can consider how design and product solutions applied for one group may be implemented in a different approach for the other. Join our discussion of aging, accessibility, autism, and dementia as we explore the benefits of incorporating elements of inclusion, equity, and diversity to improve all healthcare environments.

Learning Objectives:

• Overview with background of ADAAG history and how it has improved design for all.
• Identify aspects of autism and dementia which can be improved through integrated design solutions.
• Review examples of real-world design solutions with have proven successful.
• Explore next steps for improving healthcare environment today for all the human senses.
